- Description: It’s been insanely hot, and while everything feels like it’s coming in slightly later than last year, the harvest floodgates have finally opened. A massive surge of tomatoes, blackberries, cucumbers, courgettes, and garden grapes has pushed our harvest tracker to 29.770kg.

If you’ve spent the last fortnight feeling less like a gardener and more like a human water transport system, welcome to the club.

It has been insanely hot. Between juggling the 9-to-5, running after the family, and making frantic late-evening trips to keep plants from crisping to a cinder, my main daily routine has boiled down to two simple tasks: **picking and watering**.

Oddly enough, despite the baking heat, everything feels like it’s coming in slightly later than last year. But despite the slow burn start, the crops are finally cascading—and the kitchen scales have been taking a serious beating.

## 1\. The High-Summer Cascade & Harvest Tracker Update

At the end of July, I’ll be honest: I was feeling a bit of quiet panic. Looking at the numbers, I felt miles off our ambitious 100kg target for the year.

Then August hit.

Between endless punnets of wild blackberries, steady heavy picks of courgettes and cucumbers, the home garden grapes (the ones my toddler hasn't pinched), and the tomatoes finally turning red in bulk, the scales have jumped significantly.

We are officially crossing the **30% mark** of the total annual goal!

What’s giving me real confidence for the remaining 70kg is what’s waiting in the wings. The maincrop squash are sizing up into absolute heavyweights, and the sweet peppers are currently performing better than they ever have on the plot. Once those heavy hitters hit the scales, that 100kg target is going to look a lot less intimidating.

## 2\. The Sanity-Saving Plot Win: An Outdoor Tap!

While the harvest numbers are great, my biggest personal victory this week didn't actually happen on the allotment plot—it happened on the side of the house.

I have finally had a proper **outdoor tap installed**.

It sounds like a small detail, but after weeks of carrying heavy cans and wrestling with awkward indoor setup connections during a hosepipe ban, it feels like a total luxury. More importantly, this tap is the crucial first piece of the puzzle for my 2027 sanity plan.

Now that I have a reliable external water supply at home, I’ll be spending the tail-end of summer designing and setting up an automated **drip irrigation system**. The goal is simple: eliminate the daily heatwave panic, keep the potted crops and garden vines consistently hydrated, and save my back in future summers. Watch this space!

## 3\. Current Crop Performance Summary

- **Tomatoes:** Finally setting and ripening in bulk. The salad bowl is officially full.
- **Peppers:** A huge surprise win this year. Plants are sturdy, laden with fruit, and loving the heat.
- **Blackberries:** Absolute monsters. They are contributing serious weight to the tracker every few days.
- **Squash & Pumpkins:** Sizing up rapidly. My main hopes for smashing the autumn weight totals.
- **Cucumbers & Courgettes:** Relentless. If you turn your back for two days, you end up with a marrow.
