- Description: A massive cauliflower harvest and heavy beetroot pulls lift the tracker to 17.38kg! But mid-July brings pure allotment chaos: a sneaky snail saboteur unmasked, a windowsill seedling tragedy, and the ominous approach of the first summer courgettes.
- Author: Sam Bailey

We have officially reached that point in the summer where my kitchen table looks less like a place to eat dinner and more like a veg wholesale depot. The production line is officially motoring, and with it comes the absolute chaos of managing the inevitable summer glut.

If you look closely at any allotment grower in July, you’ll see a specific look in their eyes: a chaotic blend of immense pride and mild culinary panic.

Here is how the war on the plot is going this week.

### 1\. Operation Cauli-Rescue (and Avoiding a Family Mutiny)

Last time I wrote, I was facing a ticking time bomb: four massive cauliflowers peaking at the exact same moment. I am pleased to report that the casualties were minimal.

All of them are now out of the ground. In a move of pure survival, I pawned one off on my mum. The giant 1.050kg beast from last week met its noble end in a massive, spicy *aloo gobi*, which successfully delayed the family rebellion. However, I still have two more sitting in the fridge staring at me. My wife has formally requested cauliflower cheese, so I think I’ve legally gotten away with it for now. Marriage saved. For this week, at least.

### 2\. The Case of the Spud-Sized Saboteur

Remember my mystery dwarf bean failure from last fortnight? The seeds that completely refused to surface? I blamed the compost. I blamed the weather. I blamed the universe.

It turns out the culprit was a single, tiny, highly strategic snail living right *under* my cell tray. He was essentially treating my propagation bench like an all-you-can-eat breakfast buffet before the beans even saw the light of day.

Thankfully, the **Windowsill Tupperware Trick** worked a treat. With no gastropod snipers inside the house, the replacement seeds sprouted beautifully, and they are now potted up and ready to grow on. Take that, you slimy little free-loader.

### 3\. The Lettuce Lifecycle (and the Window Sill Tragedy)

The first wave of lettuce has officially crossed the line from "crisp salad" to "bitter miniature trees." Most of it now needs to disappear, but I’m going to let a few go completely to seed. I've never actually harvested my own lettuce seed before, so it’ll be a fun science experiment to see if the next generation is viable.

As for the successions? It’s a classic story of three halves:

- **The Second Wave:** Getting there, but not quite ready to harvest yet.
- **The Third Wave:** I put the seed tray on a lovely, bright, sunny windowsill to germinate... and promptly forgot about it. The heatwave absolutely baked them alive. They are deceased. We go again.

### 4\. Over the Horizon: The Courgette Grimace

As the cauliflowers, beetroot, and Charlotte potatoes finally finish up, the beds are clearing just in time. The tomatoes and squash are starting to establish properly, and I can see the next heavy wave of the season looming over the horizon.

I proudly informed my wife yesterday that the very first courgette of the year is nearly ready to pick. She looked at me and delivered a flawless **grimace of pure delight**. She knows what's coming. By August, we will be eating courgettes in our cereal.

### 📊 The 2026 Harvest Tracker (Target: **100kg**)

Thanks to the great cauliflower extraction and some heavy beetroot pulls, the kitchen scales have been working overtime this week. We are officially firing on all cylinders.

- **Previous Total:** 13.71kg
- **Current 2026 Total: 17.38kg**
- **Remaining to Target: 82.62kg**

We are nearly a fifth of the way to the century mark!
